“The father of modern science fiction”, Well’s The Time Machine was hailed as a masterpiece when it was published. The novel’s appeal lies in its attempt to fathom what would become of the human race in the distant future.
It tells the story of the ‘Time Traveller’, an unnamed Victorian scientist who travels into the future, to the year 802701. There he meets two new races of people: the playful, child-like Eloi, who spend there days in leisure and the Morlocks, a subterranean group who are the actual producers of resources and the superior species that prey on the Eloi.
The future he sees has frozen in the same stage of evolution and has no desire to grow or change.
